Your mom is gonna love me

Rating: 8/10

This was such a fun book to read. Matt Rife has a interesting blend of humor, vulnerability and confidence. He has a tough childhood with his dad committing suicide, his step-dad being abusive, his mom being absent, being ugly and not having any confidence. I think I relate to Matt Rife a lot because my childhood kind of sucked too. So you use humor as a way to cope with problems and get people to like you.

He was also really personal about anxiety attacks and depression controlling part of his life. A few takeaways I got from the book:

•Everyone has their own sh*t to deal with. Things take time. It took Matt Rife 12 years of no traction to become an “overnight success”

• Own who you are. Don’t try to shrink or conform your personality to meet other people’s needs. When Matt was becoming cancelled, he decided to double down and not apologize

• No on becomes successful on their own. Matt doesn’t like the village phrase and instead opted to use the phrase “It takes a community to raise a child.” He 100% credits his grandpa for all his success.

• Have no ego. If a small comedy club offered Matt performace time, he would take it. It didn’t matter if he was performing to only 15 people, he knew he had to swallow his pride to become better
